| Teaching the Value of Community |

The value of community service is alive and well at LHS! The boys began their weekend by attending a benefit for a student of the local public school, John Orcutt. John, age 13, has suffered from a blood clot in his brain and had needed brain surgery. This resonated with the boys since they had played against John in a local basketball tournament. They were happy to attend the spaghetti dinner and spend their own money on raffle tickets. The fundraisers were so impressed with our boys they posted our pancake breakfast fundraiser on their Facebook page and came out to support us in force. We even raised a little money for John at our fundraiser! It was wonderful watching LHS boys wear orange ribbons to wish John well. It was also wonderful to see them serving pancakes and our own maple syrup to all of the guests. This was by far the largest turnout the breakfast has had in a decade! This week the boys are celebrating school spirit while raising funds to send to Japan for the earthquake relief fund. Having Sora, a student from Japan, and Mrs. Darling, who grew up in Japan, with us here at school also brought this tragedy closer to home. Luckily their families are fine but the boys shared a lot of worry over Sora's arrival back to Japan for spring break. Each day there is a different option for the boys: beach day dress down , hat day, game system time, etc. The boys contribute their own money to participate and all funds will be sent to the red cross. Everyday a lesson in community happens at Linden Hill as we work together to take good care of this facility, our home, and also each other. It can be seen as boys teach each other to throw a ball better, cradle a lacrosse ball, ride a bike, throw a cast into the pond, read a story, write a poem, build a chess board, and the list goes on. Supporting your peers is an expectation at Linden Hill and it has been wonderful to watch them extend that support out into the world both locally and globally! |
