Snow Day Magic!!

For weeks the boys have prepared for tomorrow's Celebration of the Arts.  The faculty has worked tirelessly to help them finish projects and memorize their poems! The student center has been transformed into a gallery showcasing the artwork, woodshop pieces, powerpoints, history projects and original poetry the boys have written!

The only hitch: WINTER STORMS!! As parents are delayed trying to reach campus for the events the boys continue on!!!!

This snowy day began like all snowy days have for many years at LHS: with boys dressed in their jackets and ties heading off to class  realizing that elsewhere kids would be enjoying the respite from classwork, but for them there was work to be done. They went through their morning without complaint, supporting each other as they finished up preparations. Then at break time they received the news. Mr. McDaniel addressed the boys as they had snack in the dining hall.  He commented on the good work they have done and the kindness they have shown each other. He reminded them of how proud this faculty was of them.  Then he told them the rest of the class day was cancelled- WE ARE PLAYING OUTSIDE! Cheering, shouts of joy and hugging ensued! A day of snow scupltures, sledding, cross country skiing, playing with campus dogs, drinking hot chocolate and eating grilled hamburgers and hot dogs were work for the rest of this day. The boys showed determination and charachter as they cleared sidewalks, built jumps and forts and helped each other on the sled hill. The word "Fun" is a gross understatement.

When you have lived for more than a few years on a campus you realize there are days you treasure most. They may not be the most profound or filled with fancy events or accolades but they remind us as a community of what brings us here together: each other.  Today was a celebration of community, of winter, of accomplishments, of hard work and effort, of friendships, of the joy of teaching and the joy of learning and most importantly the joy of being together. You could see it in the faces of the faculty as they played alongside the boys enjoying the surprise just as much as the children! As winter winds continue to blast snow our way and threaten parents' travel plans the boys are acutely aware of one thing. At LHS we weather storms together and not only do we always make the best of it, we enjoy it!
