Language Training
Students take two classes from the Language Development program, Language Training, Advanced Language Training, or English as a Second Language as well as Literature and Composition or English 9. Each class meets daily and provides the students with direct instruction in Language Arts. Students are grouped in each class according to abilities.
Language Goals
- To write and maintain a complete set of Language Training Drill Cards and a Language Notebook.
- To improve oral expression and writing skills through phonics, spelling, oral reading, vocabulary, and phonemic processing.
- To improve spelling through application of rules, generalizations, and other multi-sensory methods.
- To employ organizational skills and strategies for decoding and encoding.
- To develop cursive handwriting.
- To expand vocabulary through memorization and use of words, stems, prefixes, and suffixes.
- To improve fluency and automaticity in reading.
- To increase confidence in use of language.
- To understand how English has developed and continues to change with use.
- To acquire knowledge, understand the effects and cope with the challenge of dyslexia/learning differences so that they can develop their own strategies and set goals for learning.
